Review @ cduniverse
While much of Lanegan’s previous solo work is a mix of languid folk-rock, gutter blues, and the kind of grunge-mutated 1960s-psych influences that powered the Screaming Trees, BUBBLEGUM is lean, angular, and occasionally almost avant-garde. Simple, driving, Stooges-like riffs and rhythms abet minimalistic organ lines, heavily treated vocals, and a somewhat industrial tonal aesthetic. Notorious substance-abuser Lanegan’s post-rehab lyrics are no less ominous or emotionally harrowing for their expanded perspective, and he remains a challenging singer/songwriter eager to explore new sonic avenues.

In between the release of FIELD SONGS and its follow-up, BUBBLEGUM, former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan sang for hard-rock heroes both old (a reunited MC5) and new (Queens of the Stone Age), gaining both fans and famous friends in the process. Thus, all eyes were on Lanegan for BUBBLEGUM, which features guest shots by everyone from PJ Harvey and Queens leader Josh Homme to Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses. Fortunately, all this attention doesn’t seem to have fazed the sandpaper-voiced singer; despite the guest list, BUBBLEGUM is as dirty, gritty, and raw as anything in his catalog.

Mojo (Publisher) (p.84) – 4 stars out of 5 – “BUBBLEGUM is, in many respects, classic Americana, at its simplest level, wide-screen loneliness, the sound of rattling boxcars and rattling lung, of dusty roads and endless journeys.”

Review by Mark Deming
With the Screaming Trees an increasingly distant memory and his brief tenure with Queens of the Stone Age seemingly over and done, Mark Lanegan appears to have well and truly become a solo artist, and while the dark and blues-shot introspections of Whiskey for the Holy Ghost and The Winding Sheet felt like a respite from Lanegan’s usual musical diet of the time, Bubblegum sounds like an effort to fuse the nocturnal atmospherics of his solo work with the impressive brain/brawn ratio of his better-known bands. Credited to the Mark Lanegan Band (though there’s no consistent set of musicians from track to track), Bubblegum is hardly short on the moody stuff, with Lanegan’s nicotine-buffered pipes leading these songs though any number of empty streets and unhappy events, as on the jonesed-out road trip of “Strange Religion,” the pained drift of “One Hundred Days,” and the wasted longing of “Morning Glory Wine” — notice a common theme yet? (Oh, and in case you were wondering, the album’s title refers not to teen-centric pop music, but a line from his song “Bombed”: “When I’m bombed, I stretch like bubblegum/And look too long straight at the morning sun.”) But Lanegan was also of a mind to rock out a bit while making this album (or figured that his newer fans were expecting it of him), and with his QOTSA pals Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri helping out on a few cuts, he does indeed deliver the rock, most notably the clanking menace of “Methamphetamine Blues,” the straightforward bash of “Sideways in Reverse,” and the organ-driven ooze of “Hit the City” (the latter featuring Polly Jean Harvey in an inspired duet appearance). But while most guys making a solo album after a stint with a successful band create music that speaks of freedom and release, Bubblegum finds Lanegan digging ever deeper into the obsessions and appetites that drag him into the same corner every time. It sure doesn’t sound like a life most of us would wish to lead, but it makes for damned compelling art, and the dank emotional caverns of Bubblegum offer some territory well worth exploring for the strong-willed.

Biography: A Chicago based harmonica player whose style incorporates the flair of LITTLE WALTER Jacobs and the subtle sensuality of BIG WALTER HORTON, Carey Bell has worked as both a sideman and bandleader and is noted for his work on the doublereed chromatic harp.
Born and raised in Mississippi where he taught himself the rudiments of his instrument, it wasn’t until Bell moved to Chicago with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee, and became a member of Lee’s band that Bell began his career in earnest. Bell also performed with DAVID ”HONEYBOY” EDWARDS and JOHNNY YOUNG, took harp lessons from Little Walter, appeared on albums by EARL HOOKER and MUDDY WATERS, and in 1969 made his debut as a featured recording artist.
His album, Carey Bell’s Blues Harp, was released on the Delmark label. Although it sparked little interest outside serious blues circles, the album enabled Bell to rise, if only temporarily, above sideman status. There years later he was a featured guest on Big Walter Horton’s Alligator album, Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell, which drew further attention to Bell and placed him on a par with Chicago’s other harp masters.
In the 1970’s and 1980’s Bell toured extensively with WILLIE DIXON’S Chicago Blues All-Stars, as well as with his own band, the Carey Bell Blues Band, which often included his son, guitarist LURRIE BELL. He also recorded with the Bob Riedy Blues Band and appeared in the blues documentary Sincerely, the Blues. In 1984 Bell and his son recorded Son Of a Gun for the Rooster Blues label. In 1988 Bell began an association with the Maryland-based band Tough Luck, which resulted in an album for Blind Pig Records called Mellow Down Easy, released in 1991. A year earlier Bell was part of Alligator Records’ critically acclaimed Harp Attack, a super-session album that also featured Chicago harp standouts JAMES COTTON, JUNIOR WELL, and BILLY BRANCH. Bell continues to record and perform.
Lurrie Bell: The son of harmonica player CAREY BELL, is a Chicago-based blues guitarist and a founding member of the 1970s group the SONS OF BLUES. Bell grew up in a blues household. His father’s band, the Carey Bell Blues Band, often rehearsed in the Bells’ Chicago apartment. After he taught himself how to play guitar, Lurrie often sat in with his father’s band during rehearsals and later in club performances. In 1977, Bell, along with bass player Freddie Dixon, son of WILLIE DIXON, and harp player BILLY BRANCH, formed the Sons of Blues. The group was represented on two Alligator Records anthologies, Living Chicago Blues, Vol.3 and The New Bluebloods though Bell did not play on the latter album. Bell left the Sons of Blues in 1982. He spent the rest of the 1980s as a free-lance session musician and a member of KOKO TAYLOR’S touring band. In 1984 he and his father recorded the album Son of a Gun for Rooster Blues. He also recorded Everybody Wants to Win for the JSP label, Bell continues to play Chicago Blues

Review: If you like Carey and Lurrie Bell you will love this cd, great song selection playing and vocals. I would give all Carey Bell cd’s five stars except (Last Night) a three star and (Son Of A Gun) about four, even (Going On Main Street) should be a five, this is a great live cd from the father & son the complete collection is worth owning.

Don’s new CD, recorded at Cadre Studios, is an honest tribute to the “Memphis Sound.” It is a collection of 10 great tunes with a fresh approach to what Don has been doing for so many years…. bringing honesty and the real Memphis “thang” to audiences around the world, in his own distinctive style.
Top notch Memphis boogie blues, I saw Don play in Memphis at BB King’s and his friendly, down to earth style had the whole place smiling. And, short of actually being there, this collection of tunes captures that feeling. If you ever get to Beale St., you gotta catch Don McMinn, if you can’t make it, buy the CD or better yet, do both! Long may you whale Pappa Don! —A music fan from Dallas, TX USA

“Papa” Don McMinn veter?n déli git?ros/énekes/zeneszerzo seg?tett ?jj?éleszteni a Beale Street-i blues zenét a blues haz?j?ban Memphis-ben. Band?ja a Southern élén eljutott a delta bluest?l a boogie bluesig. Zenéjük kortalan: a csecsemotol az aggasty?nig hallgatj?k az ?reg hob?t!

A portion of the proceeds from this 1998 release (which spans 1982-1996) went to Coffee Kids, a New England-based non-profit organization whose goal was to improve conditions for coffee growers and their families in coffee-producing countries. Most (but not all) of those countries are in South America, and many of artists heard on this rewarding CD are South American. Illustrating the vitality of South American music are Peru’s Susana Baca on “Maria Lando,” Costa Rica’s Juan Carlos Urena on “Este Son,” Brazil’s Raimundo Sodre on “M’Ban Samba,” and Colombia’s Claudia Gomez on “Soltarlo.” But while Latin America has the world’s best-known coffee growers, Putumayo reminds us that coffee is also grown in other parts of the world by including songs ranging from Hawaiian guitarist James Bla Pahinui’s “Gabby Kai” to Congolese singer Ricardo Lemvo’s “La Milonga de Ricardo en Cha-Cha-Ch?” (an invigorating mixture of salsa and modern African pop). Like many other Putumayo compilations, Putumayo Blend: Music of the Coffee Lands is as surprising as it is enriching. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Here’s a self-recommending issue. With respect to Das Klagende Lied, Philips captured this lovely pendant to Haitink’s complete Mahler symphony cycle with the Royal Concertgebouw in 1973, just in time to avoid the interpretive torpor that seems to have enveloped the conductor (with rare exceptions) ever since. It’s a gorgeous performance of the revised, two-part version, and for sheer beauty of sound and excellence of orchestral playing it has the competition beat at every turn. The soloists are also super: Norma Proctor’s dusky initial entrance after the evocative prelude is particularly unforgettable. In lieu of the cantata’s original Part One, which Haitink never recorded and which Mahler dropped on revision, we get an equally well-played Adagio from the unfinished Tenth Symphony–a little light on metaphysical angst, perhaps, but a joy to hear. This disc really does present these forces at their best, and it’s very well recorded too.
